An Unexamined Life is not Worth Living Says Plato

The Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living…True?

An unexamined life is
not worth living
– Plato
Do you believe this is true?

On the surface, this statement seems true.  Obviously we want to look at our lives, understand our place in reality, and really come to appreciate the beauty in our lives.  I think there’s another way to look at this though.  Look around you — some of the happiest people are those who *don’t* spend any significant time asking the BIG questions.  They’re not scouring books and websites and self-help sections for answers.  They’re not writing long, gut-wrenching journal entries to discover their purpose and the meaning of their woes.  No, for the most part, the happiest people around us are those who are simply engaging life and are in the business of living.  Living in the moment seems to be a very powerful notion.  Admittedly, obsessing over ideas and philosophies can bring an incredible colorful depth to life, but so can simply sitting by the ocean quietly watching the waves roll in.  Simple laughter with friends and family creates a strong levity that cannot be matched.  Obviously, as is the case with most things, a combination of both approaches is what creates a healthy balance in our lives…right?
